Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is one of Formula 1’s testing circuits and is familiar to every driver on the grid, making for a fun race watch. During race weekend, the intense heat raised the track temperature which led to rapid tire degradation. Teams and the drivers felt the pressure as they had to adjust their strategies as the race unfolded.
The top three starting the race were George Russell (Mercedes), Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes). As lap 1 commenced, the top three maintained their Qualifying positions. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) started in P6, but with a rocky start, fell back to P13.
Due to the track temperature, drivers entered the pit lane early. Hamilton pitted on lap 12 to switch from his soft tires. Russell followed soon after and switched to hard tires but remained ahead. On lap 28, Hamilton was called back into the pit lane. He committed to a three-stop strategy, which would set him behind his competitors but would also give him the advantage of being able to push his tires. On the same lap, Liam Lawson kicked up debris onto the track, and Nico Hülkenberg (Audi) drove into it. Unfortunately, it hit Hülkenberg’s car just right and triggered the safety switch, causing his car to shut down.
Hamilton passed Oscar Piastri (McLaren) for P6 and entered an intense fight to the front. By lap 32, Hamilton, who was flying down the track, was in P4. Antonelli, who was in his own battle ahead for P1, was warned he would receive a five-second penalty if he breached the track limits again. Russell continued to hold Antonelli off, but it also slowed their pace, which allowed Hamilton to close the gap further: “Am I catching them?”
As both Mercedes pitted again, Hamilton took the lead. On lap 40, Fernando Alonso’s (Aston Martin) battery abruptly failed, and a virtual safety car was called. Hamilton took full advantage of this and pitted for his third and final time. He lost only 13 seconds and came out just before Russell and maintained the pole position. As Hamilton breezed away in P1, Russell and Antonelli entered the fight for P2. Antonelli, frustrated and stuck behind his teammate, exclaimed, “I have so much more pace, man.”
Norris lingered behind the Mercedes. He later said that he did not have the pace to challenge them, but he remained there in case anything happened. On lap 53, McLaren noted they had reported Antonelli to the FIA for breaching track limits again, pushing for the time penalty. In the final laps of the race, Antonelli swiftly passed Russell and took P2. The pace and the confidence were clearly there for Antonelli. However, the commentators noticed that his front wing had come loose, and then unexpectedly, his car came to a stop. Antonelli retired from the race due to an electrical shutdown, his first reliability issue of the season, and broke his winning streak.
Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was the next to retire on lap 63 after he lost his power steering. On the final lap, Hamilton, who had maintained the lead, won the Grand Prix—his first race win with Ferrari! “Thank you so much, you’ve helped me achieve this dream. For the fans, thank you for continuing to remind me who I am,” Hamilton beamed.
Russell in P2 and Norris in P3 joined him on the podium. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Piastri finished just behind, and Franco Colapinto (Alpine) ended out the points in P10, after receiving a time penalty post-race.
The numerous DNFs this season highlight that teams are still refining their cars under the season’s regulations. In Formula 1, things can change in an instant. After Antonelli’s retirement from the race, the Championship battle has tightened, with Hamilton only 41 points behind.
